I'm one of those people that backs up their most important files three or four times over. Aside from this external drive I have 3 others, and between my laptop and PC, another 4 drives. My most important files are backed up on practically all of them. Thus far I have tried to stay away from the 1 TB drives because if they fail, that's a lot of data I'll be losing. But, having been given the chance to try this one out, and using it solely to back up what's already backed up, I think I can say that it's probably worth the money. I have only two small complaints thus far (I'll get them out of the way quickly): first, this drive does not come with a usb wire to hook up to your laptop/PC, I wanted to have it hooked up via usb as I thought the speed would be faster, sadly that was not possible since I don't have any spare usb wires laying around (and thus I cannot give any time/speed results). Secondly, when I plugged it into the outlet, the first time, it started up fine, the second time, it would not start up for some reason. I had to unplug and plug it in a few more times for it to begin again (perhaps I messed up the initial start up). In either case, the lack of a usb wire is what really annoyed me.
Having said that, I did not install the software off the CD, I do not need for this drive to keep track of all my files since I'm regularly downloading and deleting files. After hooking up the drive to my modem I simply installed the 'WD Discovery' software and the drive was found within a few seconds. Following the instructions that came with the drive, I was able to start transferring files within a few minutes. In terms of speed: a file of 300mb over wifi took about 4 minutes, at the moment I'm backing up around 12gb and the estimate is close to 2 hours and 30 minutes. It's certainly not fast, but I wasn't really expecting it to be. Also, transferring a 175mb file while transferring the 12gb file, took about 2 minutes. (For those who might care, trying to play a video file from the drive while transferring to it did not go smoothly, video had to regularly keep 'buffering'). While I wasn't planning on using this drive over wifi, I like the idea that it just sits in one spot and I can access it anywhere from my apartment without lugging it around. Very useful and, to some extent, worth the price, in my opinion. If it doesn't die on me anytime soon, I'll be quite pleased. Get more detail about
