I've only had this a week and was able to backup files pretty easily. It also worked well with iTunes picking this up as a shared library folder (or whatever they call it).
The data transfer rate is fine although every once in a while reading from it seems to be slow as when streaming iTunes music.
The set up was straight forward enough for a beginner and although there are plenty of advanced settings I haven't needed to tweak anything to get set up.
